What to Bring When You Buy a Car

You’ve found a vehicle you like, and you’re ready to visit the dealership. Bringing the right items with you can help save time and make the buying process smoother.

Forgetting something important can mean extra phone calls or a second trip. A little preparation helps you focus on what matters most: finding the right car.

Here are eight things to bring when you’re ready to buy a car.

1. Your Driver’s License

You’ll typically need a valid driver’s license to test drive a vehicle and to complete the purchase.

If someone else will be on the purchase or the loan, they may need to bring their license as well. Check that your license hasn’t expired before your visit.

2. Proof of Insurance

Many states require insurance before you can drive a vehicle off the lot. Bring your current insurance card or have your policy information available on your phone.

It’s a good idea to call your insurance company before your visit. Ask how to add a new vehicle and what information they’ll need, such as the VIN.

3. Your Payment Method or Down Payment

If you’re paying for the vehicle or making a down payment, ask the dealership which payment methods it accepts.

Some dealers may accept a cashier’s check, personal check, debit card or other methods, but this varies. Confirming ahead of time can help avoid delays.

4. Financing Preapproval, If You Have One

If you’ve already been preapproved by a bank or credit union, bring the preapproval letter or details.

This can help you compare it with other financing options that may be available. Remember that preapproval terms can depend on the vehicle you choose and may have an expiration date.

5. Your Trade-In Title, Keys and Records

If you’re trading in a vehicle, bring its title if you have it. If you still owe money on it, bring your lender’s name and your loan account information.

Also bring every key and remote fob for your trade-in, along with any maintenance records you have. Remove personal items before you go.

6. Proof of Income and Address, If Financing

If you plan to finance, a lender may ask for proof of income and proof of where you live.

This may include recent pay stubs, bank statements, or a utility bill or lease agreement with your current address. Requirements vary by lender, so ask the dealership what may be needed before your visit.

7. A List of Questions

It’s easy to forget questions once you’re at the dealership. Write them down ahead of time so you can make sure everything is covered.

You might ask about the vehicle’s history, maintenance, features, warranty coverage, total price, taxes and fees. Take notes so you can compare your options later.

8. Enough Time for a Test Drive

Buying a car isn’t something you want to rush. Give yourself enough time to look over the vehicle, take a test drive, ask questions and review the paperwork.

During your test drive, try the roads you normally drive, and check comfort, visibility and features you use every day.

Calling ahead to schedule a time can help make sure the vehicle is ready when you arrive.
